Open Source Intelligence Analysis and Google Earth
If you remember my write up of Peter Young's lecture, he talked about the use of Google Earth and other satellite imagery systems to conduct reconnaissance and intelligence operations. I have been experimenting with that myself and it will come into play a little bit in an up coming post about the strategic fortifications of Oaxaca City during APPO's occupation in the summer of 2006. I must give credit to comrade Müzenberg over on Soob for pointing me in the direction of IMINT & Analysis, and there primer on using Google Earth for imagery analysis/recon/intel. The blog's description states "Open source military analysis, strategic thinking, and Google Earth imagery interpretation. Comments are welcome and encouraged." Open source intelligence is something that I have heard about but have not learned too much about what it entails. From what I understand, it is basically intelligence analysis based solely on publicly available information. It has a wide range of applications, including for military, paramilitary and revolutionary purposes. There are numerous academic programs in the United States which have Open Intelligence study programs.

Hm, i never heard of this neither, but it does make sense. Especially for guerillas, paramilitary who dont have access to their own satellites!
At one point, early in its history, you couldn't even see strafford from google earth. But you could see the house of this kid I went to high school with, who was later suspended from Princeton for committing berserker-style destruction of bathroom after bathroom inside a dorm, after which it was rumored that he was forced to work at mcdonald's for a year to learn humility. In conclusion, I will donate my rifle to the revolution, if it's that rambunctious. I probably won't need it I HAVE PLENTY OF BEAR TRAPS.
Ah yes Stafford. Well to begin with there is not much to see in "downtown" Strafford. But that is precisely the problem with small towns with very small buildings, google earth is not adequate. On this blog in the post I asked "What about areas which don't have high-res, publicly available? Specifically I am interested in rural vermont, but most of it is older USGS aerial imagery. The resolution on Terra Server was better than what's on Google Earth now, I remember crisp B&W images and now it's in color but much less clear." so far no response.
"comrade Munzenberg."
I think you might've missed the bit of irony in Munz's nom de guerre.
As for open source intelligence, two great sources that have touched on this subject:
here
and here
You'll also get a taste for the intellect that your "revolution" will be dealing with. Better eat your Wheaties, old boy.
I guess I did miss the irony, but I am almost everybody with whom I correspond online comrade, even when they are clearly not even a democrat. Thanks for the links and the advice. I do realize the vast superiority of the enemy in terms of intellect, resources and numbers. But I got moxie, which goes a long way. Despite the intelligence of individual members of the military and intelligence services, the organizations for which they work are huge, bureaucratic, and often slow to move/react. I don't give the government too much credit, they are exactly doing that great a job with their endeavors at the moment.
You're welcome. And yes, you do have moxy. Unfortunate that it's so misguided. :)
