DIY Mortar Lanchers

For anyone who has read Guevara's Guerrilla Warfare and had a WTF moment looking at the diagram of the mortar launcher made of a 16 ga. break-action shotgun, a stick and a Molotov cocktail, you are not alone. As a guerrilla insurgency starts growing in size and influence and control large areas, it becomes possible to construct munitions factory to reload bullets, make grenades, repair guns, etc. Castro's forces in the Sierra Maestra were famous for this and their resourcefulness and ingenuity. Shown below is Guevara demonstrating a slightly more sophisticated variation of the mortar launcher described in his book. Do not try this at home as it is dangerous and probably illegal.

Creating the Conditions for Revolution in the Here and Now

One of the helpful criticisms that I have received from like-minded individuals in regards to this blog is that while it is all well and good to read up on guerrilla tactics and weapons systems, etc. what we (the revolutionary left) really need to concentrate on now is building the conditions that will make a revolution possible. I wholeheartedly agree with this; even if I were so inclined to attempt to form a revolutionary army, Vermont is not ready, nor is the United States, and nor is the world and all my efforts would be in vain. That and at this point I can count the potential recruits for such an endeavor on one hand. So how can we build the revolution in the here and now while also training for potential armed conflicts?

First and foremost one should network with other comrades and supporters of the revolution. One should become involved with already existing progressive social movements, unions and political organizations, even if they are not as radical as one would hope. Chances are you will learn useful organizing skills and discover potential comrades in arms that you otherwise would not have met. Many successful revolutionary organization were formed as splinter groups or with frustrated former members of less radical, established organizations or social movement. Regardless of whether one chooses this route, there is power in numbers and the more people ACTIVELY involved in social movements the more powerful they become. In addition to regular activities, one should attempt to push these organizations and movements more towards the left.

One tactic that deserves discussion is the "stiffening of protests," a favorite of urban guerrilla groups. Basically members of insurgent groups go to protests of sympathetic social movements and act as agitators, encouraging the group to clash with the police. By inviting acts of repressive violence upon the group and responding in kind, the guerrilla creates even more discontent and distrust of the government among the populace. Now this can be problematic as the guerrillas are basically co-opting a peaceful demonstration and bring harm upon their unsuspecting comrades. However, in this day and age the police often don't need to be provoked into making mass arrests and/or firing tear gas and pepper spray into the crowd. I find it shocking that, for example in Mexico protesters wield machetes and Molotov cocktails and fight back against "riot" police while in the U.S. activists just stand there and take it while they are tasered and gassed.

In addition to educating yourself, you must educate others. The forces of capitalist imperialism control the media, the education system, thus people's perceptions of the world and subsequently their actions. To counter act this, one must undertake the considerable effort of educating others, particularly fellow workers. Although obviously not a panacea, supporting and working for non-corporate media such as Democracy Now!, NPR and indie media efforts goes a long way towards confronting this hegemony. The Revolution Script is my humble attempt to do just that. Popular education projects and the dissemination of counter-hegemonic propaganda should also be a part of your efforts.

As your nascent clandestine network becomes established and more influential, it should start developing its support and intelligence networks. In his book "Special Forces Guerrilla Warfare Manual," Scott Wimberly talks about the preparation, planning and organization phase of an insurgency:

During this phase, the insurgency forces and general population must be prepared for resistance. Preparing the population is primarily psychological. Sometimes the enemy does this for the insurgency due to their policies and actions. Sometimes propaganda and other measures are necessary.

Because of the strength of the enemy, security is of prime concern during this phase. The resistance should try to remain secret at this time so it can infiltrate governmental agencies, organize and establish intelligence networks, align and train various factions, and choose initial targets.

If a foreign power is to provide any type of aid to resistance, or if the resistance is trying to obtain such assistance, this planning/organization phase is critical. The potential sponsor will be concerned about the potential for political embarrassment, compromise, and the chance of success. If the sponsor does not recognize such things as good planning, training, and organization, it will likely not give assistance.

There are many other ways of creating revolutionary conditions. I hope comrades will contribute their ideas in the comments section.

Tip of the Day: Do it for the Revolution!

Whenever you have to do something unpleasant or difficult, just tell yourself that it is for the revolution. Have to hitch-hike in the rain? Training for the revolution. Too poor to eat lunch? Training for the revolution. You get the idea. I always would tell myself this as a motivational tool and then I found out that an anarchist comrade of mine did the same thing.

A Brief Overview of Various Types of Ammunition

Compiled here are some scattered notes on my ammunition preferences. The guerrilla takes what he can get in terms of ammo and weapons but for those of us living in countries where guns are relative easy to acquire, here is what kind of ammo you should load into your guns. Note that Wal-Mart ammo, while cheaper in some cases in infamous for it propensity to misfire/not fire.

General Notes:

• Hollow point bullets and other dum dum round are banned by the Geneva Convention. Irregular forces are not subject to Geneva Convention but some choose to adhere to them in order to gain the protection that it provides. In Iraq, neither private security forces nor insurgents follow this rule. There are also ethical considerations; hollow points have the tendency to maim if they do not kill. The fragments of the bullet are very hard to remove surgically, thus causing complications which could led them to slowly and painfully bleed out or have a limb amputated due to tissue damage.

•At pointblank range head shots are likely to be lethal with one shot of any caliber, even .22 lr or .410 bird shot . For many applications a bullet is a bullet and will get the job done.

•Wolf brand ammunition is what it is, cheap ammo of sub-standard properties. Steel cased ammo such as Wolf, Brown Bear and Golden Tiger, (also Norinco if you can find it) is coated in an anti-rust/oxidation layer of either lacquer or polymer, which combined with imperfect casing geometry causes this type of ammo to cause excessive fouling that is particularly stubborn when it comes time to clean. Such fouling also sticks to brass-cased ammo and causing to stick in the chamber. Wolf is supposed to be the dirtiest commercial load you can shoot. Additionally some centerfire pistol calibers that Wolf loads are underpowered so much so that they have difficulty cycling is semi-caliber pistols and carbines.

Shotguns:12 gauge shells come in many different form, ranging from non-lethal to "specialty" loads like flechettes and flamethrower. I personally stock a mix of 2 3/4" 00 and 000 buck, some of them low-recoil and hollow point 1 oz. slugs. Some people prefer #4 buck as it produces tighter, denser patterns at longer distance. Others still insist that #1 buck is the best load for self defense, but it is near impossible to find so 00 with have to due. The U.S. Border Patrol loaded up their shotties with this for a while but have long since abandoned it. Winchester makes the Army's XM162 00 buck which I assume is the same as their off the shelf 00 buck other than their sealed primers, but I could be wrong. Standard 00 buckshot is either contains either eight or nine pellets but much more difficult to find is 12 pellet 00. I don't even fuck around with any other gauges, unless it is The Judge or a 20 ga Saiga.

7.62 x 39mm:Anybody who owns an SKS or an AK-variant knows how much of this ammo you go through at the range. For practice ammo I recommend Golden Tiger over Wolf as it is not quite so dirty. Wolf does make 122 grain hollow points, 124 grain FMJ and HP sold as Wolf Military Classic, and 154 grain soft points as well if you are looking for that. However, Wolf hollow points are of very poor quality and offer no increased performance over Wolf full metal jackets. Also the newest batches of Wolf MC do not have sealed primers or bullets like they used to have, a characteristic which previously made it more desirable
I have previously posted about steel-core ammo and it's improved penetrability, but some tests show that their performance is only marginally better than standard lead core ammo. I have only encountered the East German variety but I hear that some Chinese and Bulgarian ammo contains a steel core as well. If you find any non-standard or brass cased mil surp 7.62 x 39mm, save it for combat and use the cheap, dirty steel cased junk for the range. Nobody wants a weapon misfiring in combat because of crappy ammo. When ever buying older ammo of questionable origin, research it to see if it is rare and worthy saving and also if it is corrosive, in which case the gun needs a special cleaning after shooting. This goes for all calibers. Be aware of the Winchester brand 7.62x39 that they sell at Wal-Mart, despite the fact that it is brass-case is crap. A friend recently bought some and took it down to the range; the rim of the first bullet was stripped off by the extractor and the second round had a failure to fire.

.308 Winchester: There is lots of NATO .308 mil surp that can be found in bulk just about anywhere. I have had problems with Spanish .308 misfiring/not firing. I actually see surplus .308 more often then I see cheap 7.62 x 39.

.44 Magnum: I am a big fan of this caliber, having shot it through a Ruger Vaquero and a Desert Eagle. The ammo is pretty pricey and not all that common so it is not an ideal round for the guerrilla. This past weekend I shot a S&W revolver in this caliber and found it to be very hard to control; the ample recoil makes placing successive shots very difficult.

.357 Magnum: I far better choice for the guerrilla as guns chambered in .357 can also shoot .38s, a very common caliber, particularly with police and security guards. .357 is much more controllable than .44 magnum while still packing plenty of punch. This caliber can be very expensive, especially when you are looking for high performance self-defensive rounds. I use Federal Hydrashock hollow points, which are "old and obsolete" hollow point technology(according to Saheim) and don't expand well through heavy fabrics like leather and denim. I recently acquired some .38 special Corbon 110 grain Jacketed Hollow Points, which will keep loaded up due to it's reduced recoil and muzzle flash, compared to a .357 magnum. I do keep some low-recoil Bullseye lead roundnose match loads handy for zombies.

I will be updating this as time goes on and Saheim will be posting an Armorer's Report on ammo sometime soon.

The Case for Secession: A Communist Manifesto for Vermont

I had come across this a long time but for some reason, likely forgetfulness and general ineptitude I have not yet posted about it. Fellow radical Vermonters at the Green Mountain Anarchist Collective have penned a masterful manifesto in support of Vermont independence called Neither Washington Nor Stowe. It is the first truly radical piece of writing that I have seen on the topic of Vermont independence. It is far too long to be reprinted here in full but one paragraph stood out to me.

There are, in fact, two Vermonts. One of wealth and privilege, and one of hard work and sweat. If Vermonters have any chance of success against the forces of Washington and Wall Street, the battle must start in our own backyard against the business and political elite of Montpelier and Stowe. We must guard against the sly maneuvers of both the conservative and the liberal status quo in Vermont, and fight to win more power for ourselves in our towns and workplaces. Could our efforts ever cultivate a harvest hardy enough to withstand the strong, cold winds of Washington and Wall Street if we do not till our fields first? Can you start a good sugaring season without first cleaning out your sap buckets? The answer is no. There will be no victory over the enemy without before there is victory over the enemy within. For it is the privileged and powerful locally and their dupes who will stand as the first serious line of defense for the privileged and powerful classes in general. So do we bow our heads, mutter curses under our breath, and continue to subsist on the scraps they throw to us- or do we dare to struggle and dare to win against the local elite?

Comrades of Vermont, we must be prepared to defend our revolution from external aggression as well as build it through networking and organizing. Vermont for Vermonters, not flat-landers!

A Quick Note

I am sorry that I haven't been posting too much lately. I have recently gone from being severely underemployed to very much employed and don't have as much time as I use to. I encourage my readers to contact me about a topic that they think should be or needs to be covered. Saheim and I will be collaborating on an article about the different types of ammunition, i.e. what should you shoot VCRs with and what you should stockpile until the revolution comes or shit just hits the fan. Also I hope to collaborate with some comrades on a propaganda movie about the revolutionary potential of the great state of Vermont at some point this summer.

A First for the Blog

Thanks to Soob for tagging me in a fun little game, possibly called a meme, I'm not sure. Here are the rules:

The Rules:
1. Link to your tagger and post these rules on your blog.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
4. Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Soob added:
5. In light of Ortho's post I've added this bit to the meme. Present an image of martial discord from whatever period or situation you'd like.

1. Saheim and I had the same midwives.

2. The only thing I like better than digging holes is filling them back in

3. I have never been south of Honduras, north of Iceland, east of Rome or west of California.

4. I need more/any practice shooting left handed.

5. I will soon be moving to Hawaii with my girlfriend, where I plan to father the next Barack Obama.

6. I was born and raised in Vermont and Marx willing I will die in Vermont, defending the newly independent socialist nation from the forces of evil.

7. I am known to eat just about anything. A friend once remarked that, and I think he was paying homage to Rambo "I've seen (The Red Son) eat things that would make a billy goat sick." I am not above eating other people's left over food at restaurants or eating out of dumpsters. One thing I can't stand is non-spicy peppers.

And I tag:

A Primer on Primitivism and Evading Survaillance

I recent found this interesting article about living outside of the gaze of Big Brother in jolly ol' England, but these tactics could be applied to life anywhere.

"There are up to ten on every bus and dozens at every station, so avoid London Transport if you want to evade the cameras. Most CCTV runs from speed cameras, which are less prevalent in the countryside. Maps of them are available on car websites.

Tinted car windows keep your face off camera but your numberplate will still give you away. Numberplate recognition computers are a classic example of “function creep”: cameras and computers installed for one purpose – congestion charging – are now used for another.

At night, use an infra-red light bulb to illuminate your numberplate. CCTV, like all video cameras, operates in that part of the spectrum near infra-red, so such a bulb above the number will flood the camera and is legal at the time of writing.
"

Hope my reader will use this info to keep out of trouble.

The Revolution Script Fan Club!

Because a lot of my content focuses on guns, Google loves to point right wing gun enthusiasts in my direction, who are then aghast that a Marxist is allowed to own guns AND hold unpopular political views. People might remember members of the forum AR15.com finding my site and subsequently reporting me to the FBI and ATF. The same guy who started the thread there also started one on full-auto.org. Now members of mdshooters.com, stumbled across it and have had a similar reaction, although a much less violent and threatening. The first time this happened I was a little freaked out but now I can laugh at the absurdity of it all. In particular, the argument has frequently been made that if there were a socialist revolution, that I would be executed. I am not sure how they reach this conclusion, as "communists" are infamous for executing political dissidents, not those who agree with them. Also these guys tend to ascribe a sense of grandeur to me and my aspirations that I do not hold myself.

To honor these true Americans, who know that at the end of the Constitution it says "except for pinkos" I am forming The Revolution Script Fan Club, of which they are all now members. Thanks guys for all of your support! Keep those feds on my ass!

AK-47s and Ammo Stockpiling

Sorry for the lack of posting for the last little bit, I have been moving back to Vermont. Now that I have left the cesspool that is Massachusetts, I am free to buy guns, ammo and high capacity magazines. I have been looking around at gun stores trying to find myself a nice Kalashnikov to add to the arsenal. I almost bought a Romanian AK-47, the SAR-3 in 5.56mm/.223 in a similar configuration as the one shown below, but decided against it as I feel that the 7.62x39mm cartridge is one of the things that I love about the AK-47.

Over all I have been pretty disappointed in the lack of variety and prices of AKs available at local gun shops. I hope to find one soon as gun prices will continue to rise along with ammo prices. Sahiem and I have been looking at cases of mil-spec Lake City 5.56 and Golden Tiger 7.62x39 which are way cheaper than anything we have found online, at gun stores or at Wal-Mart. Even with sky-rocketing prices, their are still deals on ammo to be found. Shop around at gun stores, gun shows, police auctions, flea markets, classifieds, shooting events and even general stores. And when you do find that golden deal on super cheap ammo, be sure to stock pile some, don't just shoot all of it.

Ballistic Penetration in Urban Environments

I realized that I hadn't posted any videos in a long time so I thought that I would share this gem. The Marine Corps tested various weapons systems against at simulated buildings built of various materials common in urban environments and then filmed. It is further evidence that speaks to the relative superiority of the AK-47 to the AR-15.

Thanks to the USMC for spending all that money to make that video for everybody to enjoy.
